From the Saturday
Night Live Radio Show at the Liberty Theater in Eunice, hosting the best
in Cajun and Zydeco music, to the Atchafalaya Gateway towns of Krotz Springs
and Melville, St. Landry Parish captures the spirit of the people of Acadiana.
And the St. Landry Parish Tourist Commission is proud to be able to share
that spirit with you! Historic districts in Grand Coteau, Opelousas and
Washington preserve the splendid past of St. Landry Parish. Washington was
once the largest steamboat port between New Orleans and St. Louis and has
retained much of its 19th century architecture and character and is an antique
shoppers dream. Grand Coteau, graced with its majestic oaks, features over
seventy historic structures, including two of the nation's oldest religious
institutions. Nearby stands Chretien Point, a superb antebellum home, parts
of which were copied for the movie Gone With the Wind. Opelousas, the parish
seat of St. Landry Parish, abounds with Civil War history and is also noted
as the "Birthplace of Zydeco Music". You can see and hear all
of this and much more while traveling the Zydeco Cajun Prairie Scenic Byway
and the Real French Destination Scenic Byway, both found in St. Landry Parish.
