Louisiana Orphan Train Society Annual Gathering

The Louisiana Orphan Train Society Annual Gathering reunites orphan train riders and their descendants at the LA Orphan Train Museum in Opelousas, Louisiana. The museum is one of two in the U.S. dedicated to documenting and preserving the story of the Orphan Train Riders who arrived from the New York Foundling Hospital to Louisiana in the late 19th Century. Because of the increasing number of occupants at the hospital, the Sisters of Charity requested assistance from Catholic families in Louisiana, placing more than 2,000 orphaned children in a new home.

Since the passing of Mrs. Alice Bernard in 2015, then the only known surviving orphan train rider from New York, members and descendants of the riders still gather in her memory at the annual reunion. There, participants exchange their New York orphan stories in an open mic. While you're there, view some of the artifacts on display and take a tour with Miss Flo.

    Savoy Music Center Jam Session

The Savoy Jam Session has been a Saturday morning tradition since 1966! The jam is hosted at the Savoy Music Center in Eunice, Louisiana by accordion maker, Marc Savoy, and his wife and fellow musician, Ann. Marc Savoy's Cajun Jam Session has created such a buzz over the years that the three-hour event has gotten the attention of major media outlets such as Good Morning America, National Geographic, and Smithsonian Magazine. The jam has also attracted visitors from all over the world who are fascinated by Cajun music, and eager to meet the musicians. The jam's notoriety partly has to do with Marc Savoy's jam session etiquette. The jam is not a place for the younger artists to "show-off" but instead to be led by the older generation of Cajun music fiddlers and accordionists. It's not a talent show, but instead a cultural exchange of stories, tunes, tips, and a few laughs.

Savoy Music Center also features a large collection of Cajun and zydeco cd's, books, and gifts for sale.

Don't know how to play? That's just fine. Chairs are set up for the audience to sit and listen or get up and dance!
