Spirits of the Gods: Book Release and Open Mic

The Festival of Words will host a book release and celebration of Spirits of the Gods (UL Press), a collaboration between poet John Warner Smith and artist Dennis Paul Williams. The event includes poetry, stories and an open mic in which everyone is invited to share creative works.

For this project, John Warner Smith created poems in response to paintings of Dennis Paul Williams. The result is a publication with poems rich in metaphor and voice beside the paintings that provided the seeds of inspiration.

Spirits of the Gods is John Warner Smith’s third collection of poetry. His debut collection, A Mandala of Hands, was published in 2015 by Aldrich Press. His second collection is Soul Be A Witness (MadHat Press). Smith’s poems have appeared in North American Review, Tupelo Quarterly, Transition, and numerous other literary journals. His poetry has been nominated for a Pushcart Prize and for the Sundress Best of the Net Anthology. Smith earned his MFA in Creative Writing at the University of New Orleans. His poetry can be found at www.johnwarnersmith.com.

Dennis Paul Williams is perhaps most recognizable as the guitarist for Nathan and the Zydeco Cha Chas. Williams’s artwork is represented by Stella Jones Gallery in New Orleans and Zari Gallery in London. It has been shown in Canada, Japan, and in cities across the United States from Los Angles to New York. Williams has been featured on Nightline with Ted Koppell, as well as on World Café and American Routes on National Public Radio. His art can be found at www.dennispaulwilliams.com.

You are welcome to bring your own poems, songs or stories for the open mic. This free, community event is suitable for all ages and is sponsored by The Festival of Words Cultural Arts Collective.
